Freud Museum London

In looking for some more Freudian/ psychoanalytic art to post, I stumbled upon an article about an exhibition of New Yorker cartoons centered around the theme of psychoanalysis. The exhibition was at Freud's home in London, which is quite the museum. I've been looking over the museum's website and it is one of the cooler museum sites I've seen. http://www.freud.org.uk/.

I'm surprised to find that the museum is so centered around art instead of Sigmund and Anna's lives there. Both historical/ biographical and artistic elements are involved in the museum's mission. But, the archives of work brought in once the home became a museum on top of Freud's impressive personal collection seem to outweigh any mission to preserve and glorify his legacy. Like I said, this is absolutely a part of what the museum puts forth (how could it not be?). This is so interesting to me merely because it seems to go beyond what one would expect from such a site.

It also seems that Freud was QUITE the collector. I knew that he had an appreciation for art and antiquity, but I did not realize the extent. Look at the "Antiquity" and "Freud's Prints" sections under "Photo Library". Holding your cursor over the image will give you history and context for the piece. Click on the image to get more physical information. I was surprised to recognize a lot of artifacts that I've seen in studying ancient Egypt and Greece in my Aegean World art history course.

Also check out the archives of their exhibitions. Certainly look at On the Couch: Psychoanalysis in Cartoons, Art from The New Yorker.
